Details The McIntyre and Severn Rivers join within the relatively recently declared Kwiambal National Park in NSW just across the border from Texas.

This area has been experiencing a better season than Toowoomba and at the time of writing the McIntyre River was flowing at the falls. The Severn River has a reliable flow due to water being released from Pindari Dam upstream.

We’ll be camping at Lemon Tree Flat on the Severn River for the weekend. This is a delightful spot with ample shady campsites beside the river.

Facilities include toilets, fire places, tank water and picnic tables. Swimming here is fantastic. It’s worth having an air bed to shoot the rapids.

All this was for free until recently when camping fees of $5 per person per night were introduced.

The walking we decide to do will depend on the weather and the inclination of the group. In the past only keen walkers were able to view the full length of the spectacular Severn River Gorge by rock hopping. While this is still an option if the water level is low enough (grade S65) a walking track parallel to the Severn has recently been constructed to the junction of the McIntyre and Severn Rivers providing much easier access. (grade S44)

Other walking options for the weekend include the Severn River upstream from camp, the limestone caves and the short walking tracks in the vicinity of McIntyre Falls and further downstream.

For some though the only decision to be made will be to enter the Severn swimming hole via the sandy beach or just jump off the rocks!

We’ll meet at the Neil Street car park for a 6.30 am departure Saturday.

The 280 km drive south-west via Cambooya, Leyburn, Coolmunda Dam, Texas, Bonshaw and Ashford should take about three & a half hours. This includes about 20 km of reasonable gravel road.
