It is with a little trepidation that I once again set out to challenge
you navigationally, knowing full well that it may well be
ME who’s challenged the most. Maybe everyone else will disagree with one or more of my checkpoint
descriptions! What should my penalty be if my incorrect description has you all looking in the wrong
place?
Lockyer Conservation Park (was Lockyer Forestry until recently) is situated about half an hour east of
Toowoomba. It’s undulating country covered in attractive native vegetation. Unfortunately lantana has
overtaken some of the water courses. Even if the on going drought detracts from the vegetation, the
sandstone ridges also provide interest.
I’ll set a few short navigation courses of varying degrees of difficulty which we’ll tackle in small groups.
The grade of the most difficult exercise should be no harder than S54 but this depends on how seriously
geographically embarrassed you become.
The many 4WD tracks both mapped and unmapped will be
more of a liability than an asset from a navigators point of view.
We’ll depart as usual from the Neil Street car park at 8 a.m.
Bring what you would normally for an off
track day walk plus a compass if you have one. There are no facilities at our starting point in the park so
a folding table/chair could be useful for studying maps.
