Details
Mt Caudeaux is located on the northern side of the Cunninghams Gap and Sylvesters Lookout is located approximately
4 km East of the Goomburra State Forest Park on the escarpment of Main Range.
As the day will
be reasonably full, we need to leave the Neil Street carpark at 7.00am sharp. Please be at the carpark by
6.45am.
We have hired a bus to transport us to and from the walk as the walk is a throughwalk and the resultant
car shuffle would be difficult to achieve.
After about an hours drive, we will be dropped off at the carpark
on the northern side of the Cunninghams Gap. We start with a 5.5 km walk to Bare Rock via a graded
track.
On the way we will visit the goldmine shaft , Mt Cordeaux and Morgan Lookout. A nice cardio blast along with
some lovely views to the east. After Bare Rock we leave the graded track and traverse along the escarpment
(a few metres from the edge) of Main Range until we reach Sylvesters Lookout. This is approximately 6.5km
and the terrain requires the rating of M67.
This is a strenuous walk on uneven terrain (rocks, moss and various
types and quantities of vegetation).
I suggest (strongly) that you take the following
- plenty of water
- food
- wet
weather gear, if it rains you will get very wet and cold due to the foliage dripping on you and the wind that
comes up over the escarpment can be strong and chilly
- warm jumper/coat
- first aid kit, which should include
a couple of triangular bandages,
-pain relief and if you are sensitive to some stings/bites some form of medication
for that
- torch with spare batteries.
The first part of the walk to Bare Rock can be achieved in a few hours with little concern. The next stage will
require us to be focused on time management. If we experience any significant delays, we could well be walking
out in the dark (the requirement for a torch).
I expect to reach Sylvesters Lookout around 4.30 to 5.00pm. A
short walk back to the carpark will find a welcome bus for the ride home.
For comfort, I would suggest a set of
dry clothes be left on the bus for the ride home.
Hope to see you all there for a simply stunning walk.
The cost
of the bus is $110 plus fuel. This amount will be divided up amongst all of the walkers. At the meeting I should
be able to give some reasonably firm numbers for budgeting purposes.
