Contrary to popular belief and published Club Calendar information, we will not be camping at Tooloom
National Park. Instead, the campsite is located south west of, and much closer to, Mt Clunie, which is a
few kilometres southeast of Wilson’s Peak.
The campsite is set in open eucalypt forest, has picnic tables, standard national park fireplace/bar-bques,
and clean long-drop toilets. Plenty of room for camping trailers, and even Rodney’s tent! There is
no water available – bring enough for the weekend.
Road directions: From Toowoomba head south to Warwick, southeast to Killarney, then turn north past
Queen Mary’s Falls and Carr’s Lookout.
At the bottom of the range, with Wilson’s Peak dominating the
view in front, turn right onto a good gravel road signposted “White Swamp” which passes over the ridge,
across the border into New South Wales, and down to a T-junction.
Turn right towards Koreelah, and 4
or 5 kilometres turn right off the road into the Koreelah National Park campsite.
Please note that currently
financial club members will not be required to produce passports at the border.
Koreelah National Park is undeveloped apart from the camping area, and contains large areas of open
eucalypt forest, areas of rainforest, and some rugged ridges with impressive cliff lines.
The camping
area is a quiet, peaceful, and quite pretty location, and ideal for anyone who just wants to laze around
the camp in lovely surroundings.
For the more energetic, there will be a couple of easy walks, although
we will only be scratching the surface of the park’s possibilities this weekend.
On arrival, I plan to set up
camp, have an early lunch, and then set out for an easy but quite spectacular walk of three hours or so
down a nearby watercourse.
Sunday involves a challenging walk up Mt Clunie, easy enough but strenuous
(definitely for the fit and masochistic members!)
