Details In recent years I’ve often led a reasonably long overnight pack walk here. It’s time for something different.

On this occasion we’ll all camp at Cypress Rest Area beside the Boonoo Boonoo River upstream from the falls.

Facilities here include a shelter shed, gas BBQ, tank water, fire places, picnic tables & toilets. In my opinion though the best facility is the delightful natural swimming pools in the river.

Camping is on a self registration basis and will cost $5 each plus vehicle entry fees.

The walk I propose for Saturday is a short, strenuous but spectacular circuit from the Boonoo Boonoo Falls picnic area. After crossing upstream of the falls we’ll descend steeply down a ridge to the west of the river, reaching the bottom of the gorge about 1.5 km. downstream from Boonoo Boonoo Falls. Then we’ll slowly make our way back up the gorge soaking in the scenery and the river as we go. All that’s left to do then is to climb the front of the falls. Yes this sounds a little daunting but is much easier than it looks. Many of us have ascended via this route with overnight packs in the past. Overall I’d grade the walk an S76 bearing in mind that I’ve only visually surveyed the descent. Those not up to this can walk the graded track to the falls viewing platform to observe the rest of us ascend.

Sunday’s walk will take us to an interesting outcrop to the east of the river. I’m sure the name Hairy Man’s Rock will stimulate the interest of many walkers. It’s a return route of approx. 8 km. with about 150 metres of elevation change. Although off track the understorey is reasonably open. S44 would be my estimate of the grade.

We’ll meet at the Neil Street car park opposite the old police station before departing at 6.00 on Saturday morning.

The drive south via Stanthorpe takes about 3 hours.

Come along as the spring flowers in this region rarely disappoint.
