The History: (courtesy of Bushpeople’s Guide to Bushwalking in South-East Queensland 2nd Edition
1991) The Lincoln Wreck is the remains of a RAAF Lincoln Bomber, which crashed on the
southern summit of Mt Superbus on April 9th, 1955. Tragically, the plane was flying on a medical
evacuation from Townsville to Brisbane with a sick baby aboard, when it strayed off course in bad
weather. The baby, a nurse and four crew lost their lives. It seems especially tragic that the plane
crashed only about 50m below the crest of the highest mountain within hundreds of kilometres of
their flight path.
There is more information at a website by a local military aircraft historian Ewen Cameron, Cambooya
http://home.st.net.au/~dunn/ozcrashes/superbus.htm.
It seems that at early in the morning
some members of the Brisbane Bushwalking Club heard a large aircraft fly overhead followed by
the noise of an impact and some large explosions and they by their estimation it had slammed into
Mount Superbus. A small group from the club was despatched immediately to Emu Vale to notify
the relevant authorities. Five hours later a Canberra bomber from Amberley airbase was able to
confirm the location of the still burning wreckage of Lincoln, A73-64 just below the summit of Mount
Superbus.
The Walk: The beginning of this walk is from the small car parking area at the end of the Emu
Creek road. For about the first 1 – 1.5 hours the walk is a steady climb on overgrown old forestry
tracks. Then we follow a gully directly uphill for about 45 mins to the wreck just below the southern
summit of Mt Superbus. We should be able to spend an hour or two including lunch at the wreck
site.
Although some has been taken away, there is a substantial amount of wreckage remaining
after almost fifty years. The mechanically minded will try to identify the various bits and I suspect
we will all be trying to imagine the fateful events leading to this tragedy.
The trip is mostly in forest
and there are some limited western views through the canopy at the wreck. The walk is not hard
except for the 45 min ascent.
You will need:
• - sturdy footwear
• -long trousers (if you don’t like the tingling sensation from nettles)
• -1 –2 litre of water (you can fill up at a creek at about halfway into the walk)
• -care in the steep part due to possibility of dislodging rocks
• -personal equipment including first-aid kit
While we shall be leaving as a group from Neil St car park, the route is as follows:
From Toowoomba we head for Warwick then east to Yangan (signed).
Proceed through Yangan
taking the right turn to Emuvale.
Turn left just before the Emu Ck bridge and proceed
through the tiny township onto the Emu Ck road which follows the creek up to the Main Range.
Within a short distance the bitumen becomes gravel.
Most 2wd vehicles with reasonable
ground clearance should be able to make it the 17km to where the road forks.
This is where
those with ordinary cars will need to pile in with the 4WDrivers (2WD lite trucks should also be
OK) for the few kilometres with 4 or 5 rocky creek crossing. (Depending on numbers of walkers
and high clearance vehicles, perhaps a shuffle will be required)
At time of writing I hadn’t checked on the road conditions but last time (2002) the road looked like it
could become boggy and slippery after rain. (Let’s not worry about the highly unlikely though!). I’ll
update at the meeting.
The day should unfold roughly in this timeframe:
2 hours travel to start of walk
2 hrs ascent to the wreck
2 hours at the wreck
2 hours return walk
2 hours return travel
To get home around dusk (depending on the icecream and coffee availability) I suggest a 7:30am
start from the Neil St carpark.
