It must be our time for visiting plane wrecks, having just done the Mt Superbus climb to the Lincoln
bomber wreck.
We will camp at Stinson Park, and walk to Westrays grave on the Saturday, then get an early start
on Sunday for the longer and harder walk to Running Creek Falls.
Getting there:
Meet at Neil St carpark for a 7:00 am departure on Saturday.
We drive to Boonah via Cunninghams Gap, then Beaudesert, then south on the Mt Lindesay highway.
Veer left at 14.5 km from Beaudesert, on to Christmas Ck road, then at 31 km left on to
Widgee Ck road to the park.
The park has toilets, picnic tables and fireplaces. Water might be available from Christmas creek,
but its probably better to bring at least drinking water.
After setting up camp, I plan to walk to Westrays grave, one of the victims of the Stinson aircraft
crash in Lamington in 1937. This is a track walk along Christmas creek, starting just a short drive
beyond the campsite. The track follows the creek, mostly in rainforest and vine scrub, and is a relatively
easy walk to the grave site. Very energetic people have the option of climbing to the actual
crash site high up on the ridge. It takes a couple of hours to ascend. There is not much left of the
aircraft, or the memorial markers, thanks to many souvenir hunters.
Walk rating around M44. M67 for those who want to go to the wreck.
On Sunday we need to make an early start, as the walk is about 18 Km, and will take around 9
hours. We drive 3/4 hour from the campsite south into Running Creek valley, past Chingee Gap to
the end of the road, and then walk initially over open paddocks, cross the creek into the forest, and
head upstream, with increasing difficulty over rough track, finishing with a rock hop/scramble for the
last 600 m up to spectacular Running Creek falls for lunch and a swim in the big pool. Return by the
same route. Hopefully the stinging trees which were at head height all along the track last time have
grown a bit taller by now.
Walk rating L66.
Total driving distance is about 450 Km round trip.
