Details Mt Kaputar National Park is a rugged island of wilderness, towering high above the surrounding Western Plains. It's the footprint left behind by a series of volcanic eruptions that moved across this area between 17 and 21 million years ago.

Millions of years of erosion have carved this volcanic pile into the Nandewar Range, with its dramatic landscape of lava terraces, volcanic plugs and ring dykes. At the peak of the range is Mt Kaputar, which reaches an altitude of 1510m. There are superb views from the summit, as well as from many other lookouts in the park.

The park protects a wide variety of plant communities, including semi-arid woodlands, wet eucalypt forests and subalpine heaths. It's home to a host of animal species, and provides a haven for many threatened species - including bats, birds, wallabies, quolls and a unique large pink slug, which often appears after rain.

We leave at 6am from Rodney and Melissa’s house (105 Ramsay Street) where you can leave your car out the back. We are taking a 21 seater bus. It is a 487 km – about 7 hours journey via Narrabri to Mt Kaputar.

When we arrive, the base camp will be at Dawson Springs. The facilities here include drinking water, flush toilets, amenities block, hot showers, picnic tables, electric/gas barbecues and wood barbecues.

The pack walkers will walk down to the Currawonga Falls and then up past Scutt’s Hut and finally back to Dawson Springs campsite on Monday.

The base campers have a number of day walks that they can do including –
Dawsons Spring Nature Trail (1.4 km, 1 hour, easy)
Sawn Rocks Walking Track (1.5 km, 1 hour, easy)
Lindsay Rock Tops walk (2 km, 1.25 hours, easy)
