Start Time no later than 6:00am Friday. Details to be confirmed.
Details The plan is to explore the southern section Moreton Island which I doubt the club has previously visited.

After a one & a half hour voyage from Brisbane, the Micat ferry will land us at Tangalooma Wrecks. From here we’ll pack walk 13 km. diagonally across the island to the Rous Battery. It’s an old 4WD track with some soft sand which I’d grade about M44.

The Battery is a series of gun emplacements constructed on the coast during WW2.

We’ll camp here for 2 nights probably in the shade back from the beach a little. Closer to the beach is more spectacular but is often busy with 4WD’s and shade is scarce.

A water pump is the only facility provided. It’s recommended that the water be boiled or treated.

On Saturday we’ll explore the Big & Little Sandhills to the south. I’d expect to find some fresh water pools in the latter after the wet summer they’ve experienced.

Sunday will see us retracing our steps back to Tangalooma.

If we elect to catch the 4.30 p.m. ferry, then there will be time to check out The Desert on the way. Otherwise we’ll explore The Desert on Friday morning and take the 1.00 p.m. ferry back to Brisbane on Sunday.

Our transport to Moreton Island, the Micat, leaves from mouth of the Brisbane River (Howard Smith Drive UBD map 143) at 8.30 a.m. on Friday morning.

I’ll organize a car pool for those wishing to participate and suggest that you leave Toowoomba no later than 6.00 a.m.

The ferry costs $45 per person return. They charge $5 per night for lock up car parking. For anyone contemplating taking their own 4WD over, this will set you back about $240 including 2 passengers. Advance bookings are not required for walk on passengers but vehicles must be booked well in advance.

Camping on the island costs $4.50 per person per night and permits are available at the ferry terminal.

Do yourself a favour and escape to Moreton Island for the weekend.
