Start Time 3.30pm Sat for overnight camp, Leave from Stennar St car park near Post Office behind Coles
Details This walk is a demanding circuit of the very spectacular southern section of the Main Range National Park, providing the opportunity to experience some parts of the area that are normally only visited during a pack walk.

The walk will start at the car park where we normally begin the walk to the Lincoln Wreck on Mt Superbus. We will ascend the ridge to the north, coming out of the rainforest on the Steamer Range between the Funnel and the Mast, then follow the range east along the base of the spectacularly steep cliffs of the Mast and the Stern.

A break in the cliff line gives access to the top of the Stern and superb views back west along the Steamer Range. Then it’s up to the summit of Mt Steamer further east, and onward along the ridge to Lizard Point. The views from this ridge are just fabulous – north along the main range to Mt Castle, northeast to Flinder’s Peak just south of Ipswich, with the track following the edge of sheer drops below. Then Lizard Point provides uninterrupted views of the mountains to the east, from Mt Greville round past Mt Barney to Wilson’s Peak some kilometres south.

We then head south along the Main Range, over Mt Roberts, and then up to the summit of Mt Superbus. Sorry, no views here, so it’s onward southwest to the Lincoln Wreck, and then back to the cars via the usual Lincoln Wreck track. A classic walk through an absolutely superb piece of our natural wilderness heritage.

This is a walk for a smallish and fit party, and will absorb most (if not all!) of the daylight hours at this time of the year. Therefore I propose that we drive down to the start of the walk on the Saturday afternoon, and camp overnight ready for an early start on the Sunday morning. The water point near Lizard Point is very dry at the moment, so we will need to carry water for the day, with no opportunity to replenish our supplies until we reach the creek on the flats below the Lincoln Wreck. We are likely to finish in the dark, so make sure you have spare batteries for your torch.

When: Day walk Sun 29 June
Meet: 3.30pm Sat for overnight camp, Leave from Stennar St car park near Post Office behind Coles
Wear: Sturdy footwear, leg protection recommended
Sun protection not critical, much of walk is sheltered
Take: Food for a long day, minimum 3 litres water
Torch with spare batteries
Grade: L59

Some options for people wishing a shorter walk in the area.
One: Leave with (or after) the circuit party, and as above to the top of the Stern, before returning the same way.
Grade: S46

Two: Repeat the walk to the Lincoln Wreck which we did in the heat last October.
Grade: S56

These options will depend on the availability of leaders.

A shorter but less spectacular option for the main walk could be to ascend the main range via Davies Ridge to the north of the Steamer Range, then south to Mt Steamer, and return to the start by traversing westward along the Steamer Range.
Grade: about M47

Final decisions for this walk will be made at the June meeting, and final arrangements will be posted on our Club website.

Just a short note for those who don’t have the commitment to do the whole ‘classic’ Steamers – Superbus circuit next weekend.

Yes there will be a slightly easier option offered which would be graded about M57.

I’d plan to start walking about 7 a.m. and follow Barry’s group steeply up onto the Steamer Range, out to spectacular Steamers Lookout and up onto Mt. Steamer.

Here our paths would diverge and we’d head north through Steamer Saddle before completing our circuit via Pinchgut Ridge.

All departure, camping & equipment details etc. are as per Barry’s Footprint article.
