NOTE: Planned camps at Border Ranges, or Clarence River, have been cancelled.
After many trips to Mt Barney Creek, we are finally planning to enjoy the area in the way it was meant to be enjoyed in summer: some low key exploring of one of the prettiest and most spectacular creeks in south-east Queensland, together with lots of swimming in the marvellous waterholes that make Barney Creek an absolute delight. Oops, why am I getting carried away like this? I have already sold the trip at the meeting, and now I am supposed to be giving the hardline details for the trip. So, here goes. We will meet at the car park below the Stenner St post office (behind Coles) for a 7.00am departure on the Saturday morning. We will start our walk from the Lower Portals car park, which is about two and a half hours drive from Toowoomba, with a pit stop on the way at Boonah. The walk into Lower Portals campsite will take about one and a half hours, a little longer if the day is rather hot. The swimming hole at the Portals is outstanding, a great spot to shed the dust and sweat from the walk in. Sunday night we will camp at the junction of Mt Barney Gorge and Mt Barney Creek, which is about another one and a half hours hike upstream from the Portals. The rest of Sunday will be spent exploring, playing and swimming in the area, mostly downstream from the campsite where there are numerous deep waterholes. Subject to motivation and the heat of the day, we may get to the top of Mt Barney falls for spectacular views, and a great water slide into a spa pool on the slabs above the falls. The water in Barney Creek is OK for drinking, so only carry enough water for the walk in – a max. of two litres should do it. Take suitable sun protection. An extra kilo of luxury food should be manageable, given the shortness of the walks with packs. Sandshoes/ sneakers/hiking sandals would be useful extras to carry, for rockhopping and playing around the creek. Something more substantial in the way of footwear is recommended for the walks in and out. Mt Barney is a fuel-stove-only area. I have made bookings for the campsites - $10.00 per person for the weekend. Bring a camera!! Questions or further information from Barry 46 309 702. |
