Details Conondale weekend camp 17-18th October

This is going to be a bit of an unknown, since we will have many experienced walkers away on the Snowy trip. The remainder may want to do easy walks, or else something much more difficult and challenging. The Conondales offers plenty of scope for either.

I propose we camp at Charlie Moreland camping area, which gives us direct access to the Mt Allen firetower walk. This is open again, after a long closure. It is a fairly steep climb up the track to the tower, with good views from the top. Then if we have persuaded someone to drive around to the Booloumba campsites ( 4WD recommended ), we can walk down the very steep section to there and drive back to camp.

The alternative is to walk back down the forestry tracks where we came up. There are several other short non-challenging walks from the Booloumba side, the Peters Ck walk ( not the full wet walk ), Booloumba falls and the Gold Mine walk, for those who want to stay on the tracks.

On Sunday we could pack up and drive up the Sunday Ck road, then rock-hop down Summer Creek to a spectacular gorge. About 3 Km of fairly solid rock-hopping, but very pretty, and the chance of swims on the way. Last time we did this, the creek was fairly overgrown. I have not walked this recently, so it might be an adventure.

Mt Allen firetower rates about S77
Summer creek about M67
The on-track walks are typical National Park walks, rating around S33.

Getting there:
Toowoomba, Hampton, Esk, Kilcoy ( bakery stop ), left and then right towards Jimna on the Kilcoy-Murgon road. Turn off on the Sunday Creek forest track to Charlie Moreland campsite.

Round trip distance about 400 Km.

Charlie Moreland campsite has water and toilets on a grassy open campsite with reasonable shade. While campfires are normally permitted, there are fire bans in place at the moment, so gas/fuel stoves only permitted for cooking.

We can discuss further walk options and car pooling at the meeting. If you cannot attend the meeting, please ring me for updated information.

Meet as usual at the Neil St carpark for 7:00 am departure on Saturday 17th.
