We tried this trip down the upper reaches of the
Brisbane River in November 2008 but we were
washed out by torrential rain and floods.
So this is a case of ‘Play it again, Sam.’
We will put the canoes in just below the dam wall
where the gentle cascades should push us along
down to the broader reaches of the river.
We will aim to have lunch near the river bend at
Lowood, probably just after we navigate
some more cascades. Then we will paddle on
to complete our journey at Wivenhoe Pocket
Bridge. Here we will have to navigate through swimmers as this is a popular picnic spot. It may be the same at Loowood too.
We are able to hire 8 Canadian canoes from Ipswich that take two people each. We can possibly fit lighter people in the middle but there are only two seats in each canoe. We will also be supplied with one barrel per canoe for storing your lunch etc as well as lifejackets and paddles.
The other option is that you can hire a one man kayak, but you will need to have roof racks and be able to pick up the kayak yourself from the hiring firm in Ipswich.
The hire cost is $30/Canadian canoe so that is $15 each or the one man kayaks are $20/kayak. Please bring your money to the meeting to secure your place.
There is a bit of organising at the beginning. Just to get you in shape before we start, the canoes will have to be carried down a slope from the car park near the dam wall to the water’s edge. Then we will need to shuffle cars back to the Wivenhoe Pocket Bridge for the end of our trip.
What to bring:
A sense of fun, strong shoulders, hats, sunburn cream, something to cover the legs & arms as they tend to get the full force of the sun when paddling, gloves if you are likely to get blisters, foot protection ie waterproof sandals or booties, lunch and nibbles, at least 2L water particularly if it is hot, a sponge or cut down water bottle to bail out the water that always seems to puddle in the bottom, garbage bags or dry bags to put your belongings in as this time we won’t have any barrels. Water pistols come in handy as well (maybe that’s how the water gets in the bottom of the canoe).
Where will we meet:
At the Neil St car park (opp. Police Station) to leave promptly at 7am.
Look forward to seeing you on the water. This is always a very relaxing day of bushwalking on water.
