We leave from Neil St carpark at 7:00 am sharp for the drive via Hampton and Esk to The Spit on the Esk-Kilcoy Rd at Somerset Dam. There is a good carpark there, and we can then walk about 1Km further up the road to Shaws Gully. We then rock-hop up the creek, in some very pretty vine scrub, with mosses, ferns and fig trees, but with big boulders to scramble over and around, and of course a few patches of Lantana to negotiate, especially near the top as the slope flattens out. We have to push through some thick scrub, then onto an old forestry track and loop around back to where the Waterfall gulley creek crosses the track.
Fortunately we can follow another track for a while, then finally drop into Waterfall gully, a totally different looking creek from Shaws gully. But also with big rocks and plenty of rock-hopping and slithering, ending with a drop down a spectacular rock-slide, and finally back to the cars. Total walk distance only about 6 Km, but I would rate this as around S76, due to the steep slopes and many big rocks. Bring lunch, and protective clothing, there is plenty of scrub.
Hopefully we will get out before dark.
Round trip about 220 Km. The drive takes about 100 minutes,
Anyone who is not confident on steep slopes and rocks should contact me beforehand to discuss the difficulty.
