We will do the Mt Philp - Red Rock - Glen Rock circuit, of about 12 Km,
which will take around 9 hours.
Since we have short days, we should aim
to leave Neil St at 7.00 am. It takes about an hour to drive down to
Glen Rock via Grantham and Mt Sylvia. The start point of the walk is
near the first carpark, just as you enter the park. However the end is
much nearer the main campground carpark, so to save walking back a
couple of km along the road at the end the walk, it would be preferable
to put most of the cars at the main carpark, and do a car shuffle back
to the start.
The walk starts with a steep climb up an old 4WD track,
gaining about 600m as we go around Mt Philp, and then down steeply and
along the ridge on to Red Rock, with great views out over Dry Creek
valley. From there we walk off-track along the ridges - a few more ups
and downs - to Glen Rock, with good views along Blackfellows Creek
valley. There is a steep descent off-track down from Glen Rock, back to
the carpark.
Be prepared for steep climbs and descents. Walk rating
about M 66. The round trip from Toowoomba is about 160 Km.
See you at Neil St, 7.00am departure.
Anyone who is not confident on steep slopes and rocks should contact me
beforehand to discuss the difficulty.
